Time is Money with Launch of Watch2pay
The saying that 'time is money' has become a reality with the launch of Watch2pay, the UK's first ever prepaid contactless wristwatch, enabled with MasterCard PayPass contactless technology to allow consumers to simply 'Tap & Go' to make fast, secure payments for up to 15-pounds within seconds.
MasterCard has worked closely with watch manufacturer LAKS and issuer Vincento to bring this latest innovation to British consumers, who will now be able to tap their wristwatch against a contactless reader to make a payment at more than 70,000 retailers in the UK, without needing to enter a PIN.
Matt Lanford, Head of Prepaid at MasterCard Europe, said: "Since we introduced contactless to the world nearly a decade ago, we've been driving innovation in Tap & Go payments. We're maintaining that momentum by working with Vincento and LAKS to bring together prepaid and contactless payments in a wristwatch for the very first time in the UK, offering consumers a safe, simple and smart way to pay for everyday items."
Contactless wristwatches are already in use in Turkey, Poland and a number of markets in Asia. Watch2pay builds upon the growing demand for contactless payments and prepaid cards in the UK, which respectively offer consumers greater security than cash and allow them to segment and set budgets for different spending needs. This is the first time in the UK that a wristwatch has been enabled with the payment technology to meet both these functional needs.
The wristwatch comes with a reloadable MasterCard prepaid card which is not linked to a bank account or any line of credit. The card is valid up to two years and accepted at over 32 million retail locations worldwide.
INSIDE Opens Door to iCLASS Credentials on NFC-enabled Smartphones
INSIDE Secure today revealed that its SecuRead NFC solution is securing and powering the HID Global iCLASS digital keys and mobile secure identity feature available on multiple new NFC-enabled smartphones. Since the establishment of its partnership with HID in 2001, INSIDE has been the supplier of semiconductor components for HID iCLASS credentials, and all INSIDE Secure NFC products are now supporting the HID iCLASS command set and protocol necessary to communicate with iCLASS readers.
"Last year we announced our commitment to bring market-leading iCLASS access control and identity credentials to NFC mobile phones by building this capability into all of our NFC solutions, and now we are seeing the first results of this partnership," said Didier Serra, executive vice president and general manager for the US at INSIDE Secure. "Multiple smartphone manufacturers have the opportunity to incorporate this technology into their next-generation NFC mobile devices, and INSIDE will continue to add value to its NFC solutions through additional functionality to serve the needs of the market."
A suite of new smartphones being deployed into the US and other markets will support iCLASS digital credentials and be compatible with the large installed base of iCLASS readers used for physical access systems in buildings, student IDs, time tracking and attendance application and more. People will be able to simply wave their NFC-enabled smartphone in front of a reader, instead of physical keys or smartcards, to use iCLASS digital credentials for authentication.
