Diebold Advances Fight Against ATM Card Skimming

Diebold, Incorporated is introducing a re-engineered bezel and the Opteva BezelSentry Service to not only detects skimming activity, but to help prevent it.

The company has re-engineered its Opteva ATM hardware to support anti-skimming efforts with a new design for the bezel. The re-engineered bezel incorporates geometric fascia alterations, making it more difficult for perpetrators to attach a skimmer to its surface and is designed to eliminate the market inventory of card skimmers. The re-engineered bezel helps protect the integrity of the bezel during removal attacks and features a removal switch that will send an alarm to the alarm system notifying the financial institution of any attempt to remove the bezel.

"The Opteva BezelSentry Service takes Diebold's suite of anti-skimming solutions to a completely new level," said Chuck Somers, vice president, ATM security and systems, Diebold. "We've helped financial institutions reduce ATM fraud for years by using multiple layers of technology to protect ATMs. By pushing the industry forward from detection to prevention, we're leading the way to protect consumers from ever having to experience ATM data theft in the first place."

Americans Will Take Action against Organisations that Compromise their Personal Data

Americans will go to great lengths to avoid identity theft, and many say they would take legal action against government or private organisations that compromise their personal data, according to new research conducted by Unisys Corporation.

Results from the bi-annual Unisys Security Index, which surveys more than 1,000 Americans for consumer views on a wide range of security concerns, indicated that more than three-quarters of respondents would stop dealing with an organisation entirely in the event of a security breach, underlining the need to better protect customers' personal data shared electronically.

The Unisys study also revealed that more than half of surveyed Americans are willing to provide biometric data to secure their identities. This includes a willingness to provide biometric data at security checkpoints at airports (59.6 percent); when conducting financial transactions with banking institutions (56.9 percent); and when receiving government benefits or other services (53.0 percent).

"The latest results of the Unisys Security Index suggest that organisations face very real business and financial implications for security breaches," said Steve Vinsik, vice president, enterprise security, Unisys. "Given recent highly publicised breaches that have exposed large amounts of sensitive data, the results should be a wake-up call for organisations to take more proactive measures to protect customer data."
