LaserCard Receives $2.1 Million Order for Saudi Arabia National ID Card Program

LaserCard Corporation, has received an order valued at approximately $2.1 million for chip-ready, optical security media-based credentials for the Saudi Arabia National ID Card program. The ID cards are issued to Saudi citizens nationwide for identification, e-government and regional travel purposes.

LaserCard's advanced ID credentials are trusted by governments worldwide to protect the personal identification of their citizens, foreign residents and government employees, and to provide official documentation such as driver licenses and vehicle registration cards.



Sweden Renews Multi-Year Contract on ePassports and eID Cards with AB Svenska Pass

Gemalto announced that the Swedish National Police Board ("Rikspolisstyrelsen") has renewed its five-year agreement for travel documents on behalf of the Swedish Police, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Swedish Migration Board. The contract has been signed with Gemalto's operating company in Sweden, AB Svenska Pass, and also includes the launch of the European Residence Permit. The company manages the end-to-end delivery process including the live enrolment solution in Sweden, production of all secure travel documents, as well as operated issuance services. The contract value for the five year period is 1 billion Swedish Kronas (over 110 million euros).

The contract includes the enrolment solution including the software for registering the applicants' personal data, along with enrolment kiosks for instant capture of the holder's photograph, fingerprints and electronic signature. Gemalto supplies the operated issuance services, which ensure document personalisation from AB Svenska Pass' secure service centre, and delivery to issuing authorities. The secure solutions and the production of all secure travel documents will be delivered by Gemalto.

"Sweden was one of the first countries to deploy electronic identity documents; Swedish National Police Board, AB Svenska Pass and Gemalto have deployed more than 5.5 million of these next-generation secure documents in Sweden," added Jacques Seneca, Executive Vice President, Gemalto.



Hypercom to Supply 3,700 Payment Terminals in Germany

Yesterday, Hypercom Corporation announced that dm-drogerie markt GmbH + Co. KG, one of the top two drugstore chains in Germany, has selected and began deploying more than 3,700 Artema Hybrid payment terminals to its nearly 1,200 retail outlets nationwide.

"By integrating the Artema Hybrid payment systems into our stores across Germany, we will speed transactions and further enhance the shopping experience for our customers," said Roman Melcher, Managing Director of dm-drogerie markt.

Some 300,000 Artema Hybrid payment systems, which set the standard in the market for fast and reliable card payments, have been deployed in Germany alone. Artema Hybrid features a single slot "hybrid" card reader and secure integrated PIN Pad to accept both magnetic stripe and chip card transactions. It was the first terminal to be certified according to the TA 7.0 chip-card specifications, recently introduced by the Zentraler Kreditausschuss (ZKA) German banking association.



Cards Asia 2011 to Showcase a Wide Spectrum of Payments Innovation and Applications

Smart payments and smart technologies will take centre stage at Cards Asia 2011 on 13-15 April 2011 at Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre.

According to independent smart card industry organisation, Asia Pacific Smart Card Association (APSCA), smart card technology continues to become increasingly pervasive. Some of the regional developments in the last 2 years include governments' increased smart card rollout for e-government services such as chip-based passports and visas, bank payments being migrated to adopt the EMV standard enabling debit and credit card transactions, digital identification, and mobile payments, or m-payments, which analysts forecast to be US3.6 billion-worth in 2015.



40% of UK Home Wi-Fi Users Ignorant about Security Settings, Says ICO

40% of people who have Wi-Fi at home do not understand how to change the security settings on their wireless (Wi-Fi) networks, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has found out from an online survey.

The survey, carried out online by YouGov, has also revealed that, despite most internet service providers now setting up and installing their customers' Wi-Fi security settings for them, 16% of the people surveyed with a home Wi-Fi network are either unsure or are already aware that they are using an unsecured network.

To highlight the need for a greater understanding of the security measures available to wireless network owners, the ICO has published new guidance which will help people to better protect themselves against the dangers of cyber crime and identity theft.

The new guidance from the ICO explains how people can check the security settings on their Wi-Fi router and provides information on how to make the network more secure, including setting up a strong password to stop other people accessing the network and making sure the information sent over the device is encrypted.

The ICO is also calling for Internet Service Providers (ISPs), retailers and manufacturers to make sure the guidance supplied with their Wi-Fi equipment is clear to the end user and fully explains the risks of people using an unsecured connection.

Steve Wood, Head of Policy at the ICO said: "People wouldn't go out and leave their front door unlocked, but many are still surfing the internet without adequate protection for their personal information. The fact that Google's Street View cars were able to pick up payload data from unsecured Wi-Fi networks as a by-product of their signals mapping exercise has further highlighted that more people need to take their Wi-Fi security settings seriously".



Gemalto and LifeNexus to Introduce Personal Health Card with Patented iChip

Yesterday, Gemalto and LifeNexus, the developer of the iChip and Personal Health Card, announced an agreement to provide the iChip cards and modules for the North American market. The LifeNexus Personal Health Card is the first multi-purpose electronic health card utilising the embedded iChip for securely maintaining an individual's personal health record, with a payment card option on the same card.

Gemalto will provide the smart cards and microprocessor modules utilised in the LifeNexus Personal Health Cards. "This is a true first - a healthcare and financial payment card in one," said Jack Jania, Vice President, Secure Transactions for Gemalto North America.

The LifeNexus Personal Health Card was designed specifically to secure and maintain an individual's Personal Health Record (PHR) on a card in their wallet. The patented iChip, "Individually Controlled Health Information Platform," utilises "mobile server" technology embedded on a cryptographic processor which is both encrypted and password-protected, providing a highly secure environment to store comprehensive health information for individuals and their family members.



BIO-key Reports 2010 Fourth Quarter and Full Year Financial Results

BIO-key International, Inc. reported financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2010.

Total revenue for the three months ended December 31, 2010 was $564,806 compared to $1.01 million for the same period last year, a decrease of 44.3%. This decrease is directly related to lower licensing and service revenues, partially offset by higher maintenance fees and hardware sales for the comparable periods. Additionally, the Company experienced a delay in a significant customer order that was anticipated during the fourth quarter of 2010.

Gross profit margin for the three months ended December 31, 2010 were $425,776 and 75.4%, respectively, as compared to $910,113 and 89.8%, respectively, for the three months ending December 31, 2009.

Operating expenses for the three months ended December 31, 2010 were approximately $1 million, a decrease of 17.5% as compared to operating expenses of approximately $1.1 for the same period in 2009. The decrease was driven by lower selling, general and administrative ("SG&A") expenses, which declined by 24% as a result of lower non-cash compensation expenses and lower sales commissions in the comparable 2010 and 2009 periods.
