USCIS Wins Int'l Innovation Award for Its U.S. Green Card
HID Global has announced that the U.S. Permanent Resident ("Green") Card has won the ACT Canada "International Innovation Award" for Identity Management. The U.S. Green Card is issued to all legal foreign residents of the U.S. under the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) border security program. USCIS is an agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
USCIS was honoured for the application of secure innovations to the U. S. Green Card's structure and its data and visual security features. The re-designed Green Card, launched in mid-2010, is the world's first ID card to combine HID's LaserCard optical security media (OSM) technology and an embedded RFID tag with other advanced security features. Since the introduction of the first OSM-based Green Card in 1997, the digital security of the card's OSM technology has never been compromised. A report by market research firm Frost & Sullivan concluded that because of its innovations, "the next generation U.S. Green Card sets a new standard for international government ID programs."
"ID security and functionality are pressing concerns for governments worldwide and the card industry must continually innovate to help maintain the integrity, longevity and usefulness of major ID programs," said Cathy Johnston, president of ACT Canada. "The U.S. Green Card is a leading example of an ID card that leverages advanced technology and manufacturing expertise to enable greater security and functionality."
Samsung Android Phone Takes Over Apple iPhone
According to Strategy Analytics, a research company based in Boston, the sale of Samsung Electronics Co.'s Android smartphones has surpassed the sale of Nokia Oyj and Apple Inc.'s smartphone for the first time on demand for devices that run on Android software.
Samsung is estimated to have sold between 18 million and 21 million smartphones globally in the April-June 2011 quarter, compared to 16.7 million sales for Nokia and 20.3 million iPhones sales for Apple.
Neil Mawston, a London-based analyst at Strategy Analytics said: "The estimates show Google Inc's Android is gaining ground on Apple in smartphones as Nokia, which is turning to Microsoft Corp for software support, struggles to keep up with the pace. Samsung, which also produces low-end phones that aren't capable of downloading applications, has said it aims to more than double sales of high-end devices this year".
According to Mawston, "Samsung stands a reasonable chance of capturing the top spot on a quarterly basis if it can continue expanding its Android portfolio across high-growth markets like China and Brazil. Samsung and Apple will be at similar levels in smartphones by the end of the year".
Czech Republic Begins Mobile Phone Contactless Trial Program
One of Czech Republic's leading financial institution Komercni banka and global financial services provider Citi have joined hands to start a mobile phone contactless payment program in Czech Republic's capital city Prague. The trial program is set to run for 6 months, until January 2012.
The banks also have partnered with telecommunications company Telefonica on the trial. The trial will be carried on 400 customers who will pay for their shopping at Globus hypermarket stores in Prague by waving Samsung Star 5230 NFC mobile phone handsets with pre-installed O2 wallet mobile applications against terminal readers.
According to news sources, Visa Europe has provided the payment application in stored Telefonica's SIM cards. The technology partners of the pilot project include global device manufacturer Samsung, French payment services provider Ingenico CZ, Germany-based electronic payment services provide Giesecke & Devrient, US provider of smart card-based services Oberthur Technologies and Global Payments Europe.
