Phishing Websites Robbed China of $3 Billion
In 2010, although the number of new viruses introduced in China was down by 56% to 7.5 million, but new phishing websites went up 10 times and skyrocketed to 1.75 million. According to a Beijing Rising International Software Co. report, there were more than 44 million phishing cheating cases in 2010, which amounted to a total loss of more than $3 billion USD.
The phishers mainly attacked online gamers and online banking clients. In addition, the rise of e-commerce in China (increased 22% compared to 2009) is also a key reason to explain the high number of phishing frauds. It was reported that China's largest online retailer, Taobao.com doubled its users from 176 million in 2009 to 370 million last year.
To tackle the growing phishing problem, Alibaba.com Ltd, owner of Taobao.com, signed an agreement with Intertek, a London-based internet security to improve online security.
INSIDE's Huge Financial Loss: A Report
INSIDE, formerly known as INSIDE Contactless, was heavily dependent on the U.S. contactless card market at the time of financial crunch. The company saw its sales fall from (Euro) E35.8 million (US$50.5 million) in 2008 to E25.8 million in 2009, according to the recently released financial figures from contactless and NFC vendor.
INSIDE posted a net loss of just under E9.6 million in 2009, higher than the E7.6 million it lost in 2008, according to the recent filing. It lost E10.1 million in 2007. Like other privately held companies based in France, INSIDE is required to file its financial results with the commercial court registry, though the company was apparently late in its filing.
INSIDE, which has a dominant share of the market for chips for contactless credit and debit cards issued by U.S. banks, had earlier revealed that contactless chip orders fell from about 83 million units in 2008 to 60 million in 2009, as the financial crunch, which began in late 2008, began to bite.
The company has however recovered in 2010, with chip shipments rising to about 100 million, said Charles Walton, INSIDE's chief operating officer.

The Congress will allow key players of mobile markets to present latest NFC products and services. At the conference, held in parallel, 40 experts and market leaders from across the globe will share their experiences with NFC and strategic business insights for successful deployments. HID Global RFID Module for Mobile 3-in-1 Border-Control Identity-Checking System
HID Global's RFID reader module has been selected by DESKO for its Personal Identification Mini Dock (PIMD) identity-checking system. Jointly developed with Panasonic, the system is designed for border-control, policing and other security applications, and includes a DESKO-designed optical character recognition (OCR) unit and a fingerprint scanner that are connected to Panasonic's Toughbook CF-U1 ultra-mobile PC device.
The new RFID reader module supports the latest generation of e-passports that comply with EAC mandates to deliver stronger encryption and biometric data, be it fingerprints or iris scan. HID's RFID readers feature a user-friendly document-holding clip and standard PC-SC interface to support biometric reading.
The device is designed for reading biometric passports or ID cards and other RF documents that require support for MIFARE Type A/B protocols. It is the only solution available that supports both BAC and EAC standards, and also complies with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) 9303, International Standardisation Organisation (ISO) 14443 and ISO 15693 standards, and follows German Federal Ministry for Security in the Information Technology (BSI) specifications for biometric passport reading.
