FIME First to Offer New EMV Test Plan
FIME, worldwide supplier of test solutions for smartcards, RFID and NFC, is the first organisation to obtain a full EMVCo qualification for the implementation of the EMV 4.2c test plan. FIME thus confirms its ability to quickly adapt its offer to the market's needs and technological evolutions. The EMV 4.2c library is now available for the EVAL tool. With the latest addition, EVAL enables laboratories to offer EMV 4.2c Type Approval testing and terminal manufacturers to test the compliance of their products.
EMV specifications ensure the worldwide interoperability of terminals and smartcards, mobile payment and contactless payment applications.
The EMVCo test process is divided into two levels: Level 1 testing which is required for the physical, electrical and protocol layers of a terminal and Level 2 testing which is obligatory for terminal applications.
Since December 1, 2010, all terminal suppliers and laboratories must respect the new Level 2 testing requirements laid out in the EMV 4.2c test plan. These are essential to meet the latest EMV specifications.
L-1 Identity Solutions Launched New Set of Biometric Access Control Devices
L-1 Identity Solutions, Inc. announced a new set of high quality, low cost access control products designed to increase efficiency and lower the cost of access control installations. The products are 4G V-Flex Lite, 4G CR-Pass and 4G SecureControl.
4G V-Flex Lite is an access control device that uses fingerprint recognition or fingerprint and card-based authentication for identification in multi-door enterprise systems or stand-alone door access control deployments. The product includes multiple authentication options, template storage capacity of 5,000 in 1:N or 25,000 in 1:1 and a 500 DPI optical sensor. The device is versatile and has a small form factor, making it ideal for mullion or single gang mounting requirements.
The 4G CR-Pass is a card reader that can be used in environments with biometric and card reader-only devices, all of which can be managed on the same platform for significant time and cost savings.
4G SecureControl is a door control module placed on the secure side of the door to provide added security for single door access locations.
All these new reader products are IP 65 rated allowing for indoor or outdoor use. The devices are IP enabled and include biometric capabilities and the option to use card-only access for installations that require a mix of biometric and non-biometric devices.
Contactless Functions Add Great Value to Smart Card Market
The latest market data from ABI Research shows that the market for smart cards and secure ICs grew to record levels in 2010, and is forecast to grow even further in 2011. The milestone of six billion ICs was passed for the first time last year as manufacturers bounced back from a poor 2009, recording growth of over 20% to meet demand for the 5.9 billion smart cards that shipped. Driving this growth was the SIM card market which reached the shipment landmark of 4 billion units for the first time. These are not the only milestones: in terms of value, the IC market returned to the $2 billion level after a significant decline in 2009 when it fell to $1.7 billion. This growth is a result of higher volumes and a slower decline in average selling price (ASP) as well as strong growth in higher value verticals and a greater requirement for higher-level features, such as contactless and multiple application capabilities.
Smart cards employing a contactless interface made up a little over 10% of the total. Practice director John Devlin, says, "One might expect contactless to account for a higher percentage, but we must remember that SIM cards, which have not yet seen any significant contactless rollout, account for the majority of shipments."
Devlin continues, "In the payment and banking sector, 2010 shipment volumes grew 15% and in the coming year they are forecast to expand even faster, comfortably exceeding the milestone of 1 billion units for the first time. We are also seeing more demand for EMV-compliant cards with advanced DDA (Dynamic Data Authentication) capability, new products meeting higher level Common Criteria security standards and greater issuance of contactless solutions."
CipherOptics Released Multi-Layer Encryption Device
Scalable network encryption specialist CipherOptics has announced the release and general availability of their multi-layer 10 Gbps network encryption appliance - the CEP10G. With the CEP10G, organisations can help secure their high-speed network connections. Compatible with the Group Encryption solution called CipherEngine, the CEP10G extends the benefits of tunnel-less encryption to high performance data centres, government networks, private clouds and high frequency trading and communication applications.
According to the Company, CEP10G will be available in limited quantities in April 2011, with general availability starting from June this year. Available as both a stand alone point-to-point solution or as part of a CipherEngine enabled group encryption solution, the CEP10G will offer the highest level of data protection at Layer 2, Layer 3 or Layer 4. The platform is also designed to allow customers to add high-speed connections to existing CipherEngine deployments without additional upgrades to their network infrastructures.
Intel in Patent Settlement Row
Intel Corp has reached a settlement with WiLAN Inc over lawsuits alleging the chipmaker infringed on a string of wireless and internet patents. WiLAN said the deal would not lessen its resolve to go after Intel's co-defendants, including Apple Inc, Dell Inc and Hewlett-Packard Co.
Intel will make a series of payments on a multi-year licence of WiLAN's entire patent portfolio. Neither Intel nor Ottawa-based WiLAN, which derives most of its business from patent protection, disclosed the value of the settlement.
Intel's legal counsel had taken a lead role in a number of related cases covering WiLAN's intellectual property in laptops, routers and handsets and covers Wi-Fi, CDMA, Bluetooth and DSL technologies, WiLAN spokesman Tyler Burns said. The deal, which is expected to be finalised in a few weeks, will end litigation between WiLAN and Intel pending in courts in eastern Texas and northern California.
