PenFed CU Customer Data Exposed by Malware-Infected Laptop

The Pentagon Federal Credit Union (PenFed CU) confirmed that a laptop infected with malware has left the personal and financial information of some members exposed. The letter to the New Hampshire Attorney General Office revealed credit union discovered the exposure in mid-December 2010.

Around 514 New Hampshire residents are affected by the breach but the credit union says it has no evidence that the information has been misused so far.

The malware permitted access to a database containing names, addresses, social security numbers, account numbers and credit and debit card numbers of PenFed members, joint owners, ex-members, staff and beneficiaries.

The unauthorised code has been removed and PenFed has "identified the means by which the information was accessed and has taken appropriate steps to prevent this from recurring", says the letter.



Micropross Releases New Contactless/NFC Protocol Analyser

Micropross has released a new protocol analyser for contactless applications, the MP300 ACL1. The aim of this tool, is to spy any exchanges that occurs between contactless objects that operate at 13.56MHz.

The MP300 ACL1 comes bundled with a revolutionary acquisition probe, which is not positioned between the objects to be spied, but aside. This way, zero intrusivity in the communication is guaranteed. The MP300 ACL1 is capable of spying all major protocols, including:

ISO 14443 A/B, ISO 15693, Mifare, FeliCa, NFC-Forum, NFC-IP1 and -IP2

The MP300 ACL1's hardware is compatible with the very high baudrates protocols (both ASK and PSK modulations), and its embedded oscilloscope offers an analogue display of the communication, allowing the user to monitor the real signal without any additional hardware.



Mobifyer Launched NFC Kit for Gingerbread

Mobifyer, a Division of Merchant360, Inc. announced the release of a Near Field Communication (NFC) development kit for Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Android developers have been exposed to new NFC technology in Gingerbread with the Samsung Nexus S phone but no real way to test and grow their developments. Steve McRae, CEO of Merchant360, Inc said: "We are in the business of increasing the adoption and acceptance of NFC so with the release of this mainstream phone we developed some reference applications and since we supply mobile contactless tags to companies like MoneyCell and applications for companies like Bling Nation we decided to release this as a solution allowing any Android developer to get engaged with NFC technology and increase adoption".

The development kits feature Mobifyer mobile contactless tags that are custom encoded by the purchaser online. When a program is ready to launch, Mobifyer supplies custom designed, printed and encoded contactless tags, wristbands, key fobs and cards.



UIDAI given 10.00000 Aadhaar Numbers

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has successfully distributed one millionth unique identification number for its multipurpose National Identity Card (MNIC) project - Aadhaar. Since September 29 last year when the first number was issued, the Indian government has successfully given out 10.00000 Aadhaar numbers to its citizens.

Interestingly, the youngest person to receive the Aadhaar number was a 13-day-old baby while the oldest person to receive the same was 103 years old. The UIDAI Director General and Mission Director R S Sharma said, "Enrolment for the Aadhaar number will accelerate further in the coming weeks, as more registrars begin enrolling residents".

ICO Closed 2006 FIFA World Cup Ticket Information Breach Case

Last year September, the ICO started an investigation over an allegation that a database containing the personal information of 250,000 individuals who had purchased the 2006 Germany FIFA World Cup matches tickets, had been unlawfully sold on the black market. The accusations were made in the Norwegian newspaper, Dagbladet.

Dagbladet alleged that personal information, including the passport details of about 35,689 ticket purchasers from the UK were included on a database that had been sold to an organisation in Norway. The newspaper also reported that an individual employed by a company based in Manchester, was given the charge of selling ticket lists.

ICO's investigation revealed that the ticketing database was created by a German company working on behalf of the German Football Association and the FIFA World Cup Organising Committee in the country. Subsequent enquiries were also made by the Norwegian Data Protection Authority on behalf of the ICO.

Finally, the ICO concluded the case finding no evidence to suggest that any person has unlawfully obtained personal information within the UK, or that any person or organisation has breached UK data protection laws.



RIM Gives India Access to Messenger Services

Canada's Research In Motion (RIM) said it has provided solutions that will let India's security agencies access Blackberry's popular messenger and public email services, barring the corporate email services.

The lawful access capability now available to RIM's carrier partners meets the standard required by the government of India for all consumer messaging services offered in the Indian marketplace," Research In Motion said in a customer update.

The India government had pressurised RIM to provide access to data on its secure networks as India wants to monitor RIM's corporate email and messenger services, fearing the BlackBerry's heavy encryption makes the smartphones convenient for terrorists to use without being monitored. It even threatened to ban the services if the BlackBerry maker did not provide such access.

India already had access to monitor the internet, voice calls and short-messaging services on the smartphones.
