New MorphoIDent Launched in North America
MorphoTrak (Safran group) has released MorphoIDent at the Colorado Sheriffs' Winter Conference. Designed for law enforcement officers in the field, MorphoIDent mobile devices provide on-the-spot identity checks in real-time.
MorphoIDent weighs about 5 oz, and is palm-sized. As a rugged, state-of-the-art mobile fingerprint identification device, it includes functional features such as an intuitive interface, folder management, vibration alert for noisy environments and an easy-to-use keypad. Fingerprints are captured with an FBI certified optical PIV sensor, including real-time automated quality check, and searched against an on-device watch-list or local, state and federal automated fingerprint identification (AFIS) databases.
Search results shown on the device's large colour LCD display provide officers fast access to critical crime solving information. MorphoIDent can be easily integrated into an existing IT architecture without incurring additional infrastructure costs.

GSI Awarded Contract for SIGNED Project
GSI announced that they have been awarded a contract as part of a consortium for the development of an innovative paper-based document authentication system. The system, developed jointly by a 5-member consortium from 3 countries, will be designed to enhance trust for information exchange in a paper medium, and overcome many common fraud scenarios, ensuring authenticity, integrity and non-repudiation.
Through this programme, development of technology components and tools will be performed by research teams at The Galician Research and Development Centre in Advanced Telecommunications (Spain) and University of Rome "Tor Vergata" (Italy) for the benefit of SME participants Bit Oceans Research S.L. (Spain), Global Security Intelligence (UK), and LAND S.R.L. (Italy).
The work is completed under the "Research for the Benefit of SMEs" Programme which enables SMEs to "increase their research efforts, extend their networks, better exploit research results and acquire technological know how, bridging the gap between research and innovation."
The project will be officially launched at a kick-off meeting to be held in Vigo, Spain in January 2011, though preliminary efforts on the project are already underway.
A Million Ingenico Terminals Delivered to Latin America in 2010
Ingenico has reached the historic milestone of delivering 1 million terminals in Latin America in 2010. The payment terminals, which include POS and PIN Pads were equipped with secure magnetic stripe, and smart cards readers were delivered to major banks and acquirers in the region over the past 12 months, thereby enhancing security of customers. The markets which showed greatest demand were Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile and Peru.
Much of this success is attributed to the introduction of the new family of countertop terminals iCT220 and iCT250 whose deliveries totalled 350,000 units. This achievement was also made possible due to the delivery of thousands of PIN Pads iPP320, recently launched in the region, as well as signature capture terminals and the payment PDA iPA280.
Google Works on Mobile-Payment Service
Google is working on a mobile-payment and advertising service that could be launched this year, enabling consumers to make purchases by tapping their NFC-enabled Android phones, sources told NFC Times.
It is unclear, however, if Google launches the service, how the company would overcome the formidable challenge of building an acceptance infrastructure at the retail point of sale. That would be a problem whether Google tries to launch its own payment scheme or partners with an established payment network. Fewer than 2% of merchant terminals in USA are equipped to accept contactless payment from any brand, including Visa and MasterCard Worldwide.
TazTag to Demo TazCard and TazBox at 2011 International CES
TazTag announce that production versions of its highly secure TazCard contactless mobile electronic wallet and TazBox NFC hotspot products will be on display and demonstrated at the 2011 International CES being held in Las Vegas January 6-9. Both products are expected to begin volume production and delivery to system integrators and solution providers in the first quarter of 2011.
Based on the NFC SecuRead System-in-Package solution from INSIDE Secure, TazCard and TazBox simplify the deployment of secure contactless communications for a variety of applications in retail services-including payment, coupon and loyalty-home automation, home care, commercial security and other applications. In addition to NFC, both products also feature ZigBee medium-range wireless communications for use in retail services and home automation applications.
"Secure contactless devices such as our TazCard and TazBox promise to revolutionize a variety of everyday interactions, from enhancing the customer retail shopping experience to expediting the delivery of home care services to providing highly secure access control for sensitive environments such as airports," said Eric Fouchard, CEO of TazTag.
Essentially a special-purpose, Linux-based tablet computer about the size of a credit card, the TazCard features a 3.5-inch colour touch screen, biometric authentication, audio output, data storage and a tamper-resistant secure element. It offers USB and ZigBee communications in addition to NFC.
The TazBox is a true, autonomous NFC hotspot that provides all the infrastructure necessary to enable secure contactless communications with mobile NFC devices. TazBox also includes a ZigBee gateway. The TazBox connects to back-end systems through a flexible suite of Wi-Fi, Ethernet and optional 3G interfaces, and can be conveniently placed on any desk or counter top to provide a link between users and service providers.
TSYS Acquires Remaining 49 Percent of First National Merchant Solutions from First National Bank of Omaha
TSYS announced that it has acquired the remaining 49-percent interest in First National Merchant Solutions, LLC (FNMS), from First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO). The company will be rebranded as TSYS Merchant Solutions. TSYS formed a joint venture with FNBO in April 2010, when it acquired a 51-percent controlling interest in the direct merchant acquirer and transaction processor.
FNMS offers transaction processing, merchant support, credit underwriting, risk management and value-added services, as well as Visa and MasterCard branded prepaid cards for businesses of any size. Ranked as the 10th-largest merchant acquirer in the U.S. by dollar volume in 2009 by The Nilson Report, FNMS has a 57-year history in the acquiring industry with more than 300,000 active merchant outlets in its diverse portfolio.
"We have been very pleased with the performance of the joint venture, and determined that total ownership is important to our diversification strategy," said Philip W. Tomlinson, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of TSYS. "TSYS Merchant Solutions positions TSYS for further growth in the acquiring industry."
TSYS acquired the remaining 49 percent of FNMS for approximately $169.6 million. The transaction closed Jan. 1, 2011. TSYS management will discuss the acquisition in their 4Q 2010 Earnings Conference Call on Jan. 25, 2011.
