Watchdata Surpassed 2.5 Million SIMpass Deployment

Watchdata, a worldwide leader in innovative data security and smart card based solutions, has exceeded the 2.5 million unit mark for the commercial rollout of SIMpass mobile proximity payment solution in China. More than 2.5 million SIMpass cards are issued in 20 cities and provinces, including Beijing, Fujian, Hunan, Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

SIMpass transforms a normal mobile phone into a contactless payment tool, thereby enabling mobile operators to bring NFC mobile payment services to market quickly. Through its contact interface, SIMpass acts like a standard SIM card to execute subscriber identity authentication to the mobile phone. Via its contactless interface, it acts as a contactless mobile payment portal handling transit, banking, payment, access control and many other contactless applications.

NXP and Giesecke & Devrient Leads Mass Deployment of NFC in Mobile Handsets

NXP Semiconductors N.V. and security specialist Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) announced the full validation of a joint software solution offering secure interfaces between the handset, NFC functionality and secure elements such as the SIM card. The solution enables NFC to be integrated securely into mobile handsets based on the Android platform and other operating systems. In addition, the validated software will meet the needs of mobile network operators who are specifically demanding secure elements within the handset. The first Android handset supporting this enhanced functionality is expected to be launched during the second quarter of 2011.

The availability of an integrated secure NFC software solution within the NFC ecosystem represents a breakthrough for the future deployment of NFC-based services, which will offer consumers and the industry a vast array of mobile services - mobile payment and mobile ticketing. This solution is based on the integration of NXP's NFC controllers in mobile handsets with G&D's secure software solutions, as well as its expertise in securing transactions via the secure element.

Vodafone and Intel in M2M Partnership

Vodafone and Intel are teaming up to develop and market machine-to-machine (M2M) solutions that will combine Intel's computing processor platforms with Vodafone's network and connectivity services. Applications are expected to range from smart meters, connected white goods and connected vehicles to entire "smart" buildings, the companies said in a joint statement. The news comes a day after Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom announced plans to develop a Europe-wide network for M2M applications.

Vodafone and Intel will produce system development kits based on Intel's Atom processor that will help to quickly develop M2M systems, to embed them in objects, and connect them to communications networks, the firms said.

The move puts Vodafone and Intel into direct competition with Nokia and UK-based chip designer ARM. The European Commission recently decided to fund the conversion of Nokia's Symbian mobile operating system into one suitable for embedded systems. ARM designs currently outsell Intel's, and are already optimised for connection to mobile networks.

Gemalto Launches Protiva One Time Password Application for Mobile Users

Gemalto introduces Protiva Mobile OTP, a convenient and secure new way for businesses and their employees to deploy two-factor authentication by simply using their mobile phones. The new solution is part of Gemalto's Protiva Strong Authentication family, which encompasses the validation server and a range of Protiva authentication application software and authentication devices that allow businesses to choose the solution that best fits their needs. One Time Password (OTP) replaces static passwords with strong authentication and provides a convenient additional level of security for transactions and access control.

Protiva Mobile OTP works with the popular handset platforms such as Blackberry, iPhone, including the handsets running Java, Windows CE and Brew. Employees simply need to download Gemalto's secure app onto their mobile phone, which is setup to immediately generate and receive OTPs using the phone as the interaction and computing device.

Combining the mobile credential with their username and one-time-password grants employees the appropriate access to company resources such as a VPN, intranet, mail directory, digital signature, mail and web pages. Protiva Mobile OTP is simple for IT administrators to deploy and provision, and is compatible with the majority of industry-leading IT infrastructure elements.

GlobalPlatform to Standardize the Trusted Execution Environment

GlobalPlatform, the organisation which standardizes the management of applications on secure chip technology, has published a white paper that outlines the benefits of introducing and standardizing the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) in mobile devices. The white paper - which is free to download from www.globalplatform.org - will be of interest to all parties operating within the mobile services sector, as the TEE aims to resolve security concerns in the mobile handset market, particularly with reference to digital rights management and finance applications.

The TEE is a secure area that resides in the main processor of the phone and guarantees that sensitive data is stored, processed and protected in a trusted environment. Its ability to offer safe execution of authorized security software, known as trusted applications, enables the TEE to enforce protection, confidentiality, integrity and access rights of the data belonging to those trusted applications. This provides end-to-end security.

GlobalPlatform has committed resources to standardizing the TEE. This will benefit the industry as a whole by lowering implementation costs, creating greater certainty and building a platform for interoperability across the applications operating on the mobile device.

Christophe Colas, GlobalPlatform Device Committee Chair, comments: "The TEE provides a path to resolving security needs while still supporting the key performance required. The aim of our focus on the TEE is to work alongside all members of the value chain to pull together a totally interoperable solution for securing trusted applications on mobile devices. We believe our work will deliver significant benefits to the mobile services marketplace."
