Initial Determination Finds Motorola Mobility Did Not Violate Six of the Seven Patents

Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. (Motorola Mobility) has announced that it has received notice that the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) in the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) action brought by Microsoft against Motorola Mobility has issued an initial determination. The ALJ determined that Motorola Mobility does not violate six of the seven Microsoft patents listed in Microsoft's suit. The Company noted that Microsoft had previously dropped two patents from its original case which included nine patents.

"We are very pleased that the majority of the rulings were favourable to Motorola Mobility," said Scott Offer, senior vice president and general counsel of Motorola Mobility. "The ALJ's initial determination may provide clarity on the definition of the Microsoft 566 patent for which a violation was found and will help us avoid infringement of this patent in the U.S. market."

Microsoft continues to infringe Motorola Mobility's substantial patent portfolio and Motorola Mobility has active patent infringement litigation and proceedings against Microsoft in a number of jurisdictions, including the ITC. Motorola Mobility remains confident in its position and will continue to move forward with its complaints.

The ALJ's initial determination is subject to further review by the ITC. The final decision in this case, based on the deliberation of the full ITC, is expected by April 20, 2012. The ITC's final determination ruling would be subject to a 60-day review period by U.S. President Obama. The Company noted that sales outside the U.S. are not within the focus of the ITC.

Brighton Collectibles Engages Shoppers in the Aisle

Brighton Collectibles founder and president Jerry Kohl has a clear vision of customer engagement in his stores, and it doesn't involve sales associates tethered to a cash register behind a counter. Instead, he's opted to bring the checkout to shoppers anywhere in the store, using GlobalBay Mobile POS (mPOS) from VeriFone Systems, Inc.

VeriFone announced that GlobalBay's mPOS is now deployed nationwide to speed sales of the Brighton Collectibles coordinated accessories at more than 150 company-owned locations. More than 300 iPod Touch systems equipped with credit card readers are being utilized to ensure sales associates are able to quickly engage and satisfy customer purchase needs, rather than asking them to wait in line at the cash register.

"Today's savvy shoppers are increasingly experienced with mobile technologies and accustomed to instant execution of online sales, so they naturally expect to see similar progress when making purchases in-store," said Sandeep Bhanote, VeriFone vice president and general manager of the Mobile Retail Systems business.

Japan Launches NFC Consortium

NTT DOCOMO Inc., KDDI Corp. and SoftBank Mobile Corp. announced today their establishment of Japan Mobile NFC Consortium to coordinate the adoption of multiple international standards for NFC technologies incorporated in their mobile devices and services.

Japan's three mobile operators already offer Osaifu- Keitai (wallet phone) mobile services based on the contactless-IC smartcard called FeliCa. Overseas, however, mobile operators and service providers are increasingly adopting Type A and Type B standards to develop growing markets for NFC services. In view of this worldwide trend, the consortium intends to work with mobile industry groups in Japan, including service suppliers and handset manufacturers, to incorporate compatibility with the Type A and B standards in the Japanese mobile ecosystem.

By ensuring compatibility with multiple NFC standards, the consortium aims to:

Free mobile users in Japan, both residents and international travellers, from having to concern themselves about different NFC service standards.

Create an environment in Japan where service providers can offer efficient, low-cost NFC services based on common standards and rules adopted by the three mobile operators.

CA/Browser Forum Approves Baseline Requirements for SSL/TLS Certificates

The CA/Browser Forum has released the "Baseline Requirements for the Issuance and Management of Publicly Trusted Certificates," the first international baseline standard for the operation of Certification Authorities (CAs) issuing SSL/TLS digital certificates natively trusted in browser software.

SSL/TLS digital certificates are used to authenticate the ownership of websites and other online resources, as well as to encrypt information for privacy as it crosses the Internet and other networks.

The Baseline Requirements draw upon best practices from across the SSL/TLS sector to provide clear standards for CAs on important subjects including verification of identity, certificate content and profiles, CA security, revocation mechanisms, use of algorithms and key sizes, audit requirements, liability, privacy and confidentiality, and delegation (including external sub-CAs and registration authorities).

The Baseline Requirements become effective on July 1, 2012

Transact Network Issues First Visa Products with Ixaris

William Lorenz, Banking Director at Ixaris, said: "Given the success of the partnership with Transact Network, it was only natural to expand our relationship to include virtual and plastic prepaid Visa products. Transact's ability to design and deliver prepaid programs in a cost effective manner is critical to our successful partnership. We are excited about expanding our existing partner network."
