Mobile and Cloud-Based Technologies to Enhance ePassport Industry

At the ICAO Regional Seminar on MRTDS: Biometrics and Border Security held in Singapore last week Entrust presented an overview of how mobile technologies and cloud-based services will impact ePassport technology.

Entrust's presentation illustrated that mobile and cloud-based offerings are currently disrupting the IT landscape and will soon need to be addressed by governments and border control agencies. Entrust noted that while it will be necessary for agencies to devote time to prepare, these new technologies offer great potential.

David Mahdi, Entrust's Senior Product Marketing Manager said, "The growing computational power and lower costs of mobile devices make these tools increasingly accessible to nearly every border agent around the world. Mobile technology, coupled with cloud-based solutions, offers countries and jurisdictions the possibility of inspecting and validating ePassports anywhere in the world, which alleviates the cost and complexity of ePassport technology that has left many countries around the world behind."

Identive Delivers Additional Smart Card Readers for Spanish National Electronic ID Program

Identive Group, Inc. today announced that it has shipped an additional 122,000 SCR3310v2.0 smart card readers to support Spain's national electronic ID card program.

The smart card readers will be used to promote the use of the DNI electronico, or electronic ID card, which the Spanish government launched in late 2009. By providing card readers free of charge, the Spanish government aims to encourage individuals and businesses to use the secure DNI electronico to access eGovernment, eBanking and eAdministration applications, as well as to digitally sign documents. Several Spanish commercial sponsors also are supporting the project with special services and promotions that leverage the security and convenience of the eID card.

"The DNI electronico project offers substantial advantages to citizens as well as businesses: online forms for government services can be filed and processed faster, and eBanking applications can be conveniently executed, " said Dr. Manfred Mueller, executive vice president of Identive Group and managing director of the Company's ID Infrastructure division.
