HTC Defeats Nokia

Taiwan's HTC has overtaken Finland-based Nokia to become the third most valuable smartphone maker in the world. The growth of HTC, which was valued at USD 33.8 billion after the close of trading in Asia yesterday, also highlighted the slash in value on Nokia which has failed to keep intact its dominant position in the new smartphone market. The Finnish mobile phone maker's market value share was USD 33.4 billion, falling by a fifth over the same period as that of the Taiwan mobile maker.

HTC's market value was higher than Sony and LG Electronics, according to Thomson Reuters data. Only Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics have market positions higher than HTC.

According to Gartner, Nokia remains the world's largest producer of mobile devices by volume, with a 28.9% global market share at the end of last year. But, Nokia has being defeated by Apple iPhones and Google Android devices when it comes to smartphones business.

EU Commission Publishes Guidelines on RFID and Privacy

The European Commission has published voluntary privacy implications guidelines for companies regarding their use of radio frequency identification (RFID) chips.

The Commission has set the guidelines in consultation with various industry groups and data protection regulators. Through the guidelines, the executive body of the European Union wants the companies that sign up to the guidelines to carry out a privacy risk assessment of products containing RFID chips. The firms will have to establish measures to address the leak of private information from RFID devices before the products can be sold in the market.

Under the Commission-published guidelines, companies using the chips to store personal data will conduct a full PIA (Privacy Impact Assessment) report. A small PIA audit is required in relation to RFID tags that a person may carry but which contain no personal data. No PIA is required for RFID tags on items not linked to personal information, such as supermarket pallets.
