G&D Develops USIM Card for Telefonica's First NFC Multi-Application Project in Spain

Giesecke & Devrient's Spanish subsidiary - GyD Iberica S.A., has designed and developed the first NFC mobile phone project of Telefonica. G&D has become the technological partner of Telefonica, and the Company will offer multiple applications to Telefonica in making its mobile project a success.

The USIM Card, designed by Giesecke & Devrient, is based on Java technology, and the Card can house different applications for any NFC handset. The USIM Card includes VISA's payment application and an SWP (Single Wire Protocol) interface, which permits communication with the mobile device's NFC chip with the POS reader.

From yesterday onwards, a group of chosen Telefonica employees and clients of the participating banks will receive a Samsung NFC-based mobile phone handset to enable them to make payments in shops, restaurants, and cafes simply by bringing the handset close to the POS reader. Using their mobile phones, the Telefonica employees will also be able to access the company buildings in Distrito C in Madrid by tapping their mobiles close to the access control reader.

According to news sources, G&D will soon develop the technology to make the users have their different cards such as bank, loyalty, membership, transport, etc, on their mobiles and replace the traditional physical cards.

Samsung and Visa to Offer Mobile Payments in 2012 London Olympics

Samsung and Visa have teamed up to provide mobile payment technology for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics. Both the companies are official sponsors of 2012 London Olympics.

The new NFC-based contactless mobile payment system will allow people pay using their Samsung Olympic and Paralympics Games mobile handset. Customers need to insert a Visa-enabled SIM card within their mobile phones, select the Visa mobile contactless application, click on pay and hold the cell phone in front of a contactless reader at the point of purchase to make payments. Visa has already started working with a number of banks and retailers across the world in a bid to make its contactless technology commercially successful. In London, more than 60,000 locations are accepting contactless payments.

Daon Offers New Version of IdentityX against Fraudulent Transactions and Ensure Privacy

Daon announce the release of their latest version of IdentityX - the mobile platform that can lower down the risk of unauthorised transactions and offers protection to consumers and business houses against on-line fraud and illegal hacking.

IdentityX was first introduced in 2010 to let individuals and companies know about the identity of the people they are interacting with. IdentityX is Daon's patented technology that can fuse attributes such as something you have (mobile phone), something you know (PIN), something you are (multiple biometrics, like face, voice, palm) and where you are (GPS location).

The latest version of the device also provides a software development framework for mobile phones that enables third-party application developers to build fully functioning mobile apps that use IdentityX to protect the identity of their customers.

According to Daon, IdentityX is available on all the leading mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android devices. Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 will also have the system shortly.

IBM Launched New European Advanced Security Centre

IBM has launched the Institute for Advanced Security in Brussels, Belgium to help both private and public sector fight against online fraud and hacking. IBM's Brussels centre will act as the Security Centre for all the European countries.

The Institute for Advanced Security will offer different kinds of security advice and services, stressing on issues like cloud computing, endpoint management and mobile security.

As Robert Havas, chairman of the European Organisation for Security said: "IT and cyber security are inseparable topics that require the highest attention of the European Commission".

Hence, the centre will help in collaborating the governments and businesses with security research, services and software to offer highest level of protection of sensitive data and information. At present, IBM runs 9 worldwide research labs and offers around 250 security-related products.

Vodafone Acquires Essar for $5 Billion

According to Vodafone, Essar Company will sell its 33% stake in Vodafone Essar, the UK group's Indian business for $5 billion. The deal is hoped to bring an end to a long drawn dispute between Vodafone and the Essar Group over how to value the Indian conglomerate's minority stake in Vodafone Essar.

The financial transaction between Vodafone and Essar is believed to be completed in November 2011.

As early as in 2007, Vodafone gave 2 options to Essar - either sell off its entire stake or just sell 33% of shareholding at an independently appraised fair market value. In the same year, Vodafone bought 67% of Hutchison Essar's shares for $10.9 billion. Later, Hutchison Essar was renamed as Vodafone Essar.

Google's Search Ends in Kansas City

Google Inc. will introduce super-fast high-speed internet broadband connection in the Kansas City of US. On its official blog, the search giant said Kansas City would be the first one to become the inaugural site for its "Fiber for Communities" program.

Google believes the internet access in Kansas will be more than 100 times faster (as fast as 1 gigabit per second to as many as 500,000 people) than the existing broadband connection in most U.S. homes. The Company will start rolling out its service starting 2012. A total of 1100 US cities made a bid to win over Google's ambitious test site.

Milo Medin, Google's vice president of access services wrote on Google blog: "In selecting a city, our goal was to find a location where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community and develop relationships with local government and community organizations. We've found this in Kansas City".
