Great Wall of China Adopts Contactless Ticketing

Royal Philips Electronics has announced that the Beijing Municipal Administration and Communications Card Co. Ltd. (BMAC) is using Philips' MIFARE UltraLight contactless chip technology in a new e-ticketing system for the Great Wall of China at Badaling, Beijing. In the near future, visitors will obtain faster, easier and more convenient access to this popular tourist destination, as existing magnetic card access is replaced by Philips' contactless chip technology used in a contactless Smart Card system. The new e-ticketing system is compatible with Beijing's existing One-Card ticketing system, which will be used at the 2008 Olympics and will also support Beijing Public Transportation mass transit cards based on Philips' MIFARE contactless chip technology.

Infineon Introduces a New Chip Card Controller

At the Smart Cards Expo India 2004 show in New Delhi, Infineon Technologies AG, a supplier of integrated circuits (ICs) for chip cards, has announced availability of a new family of security controllers for standard 8-bit and 16-bit chip card applications. The new "66P Enhanced", or 66PE, family offers intelligent performance management and enhanced security features. With EEPROM sizes ranging from 2K bytes for low-end payment applications to the 136K bytes needed for high-end mobile communications SIM (Security Identity Module) cards (GSM, UMTS), the 66PE products are also designed for use in identification (e.g., national ID and health cards) and payment applications, such as electronic purse and debit/credit applications.

The 66PE series is code-compatible with the 66P series, enabling Smart Card manufacturers to rapidly and easily migrate existing software masks. To accommodate new application software, the new controller family also offers an enhanced instruction set that facilitates access to larger on-chip memories while reducing the code size and increasing the performance of some program sequences by up to 80%. The 66PE internal clock frequency is adjustable according to available power or required performance and runs at up to 33 MHz, which is double the frequency of the predecessor 66P family. To provide maximum performance within specified limits, e.g., 6 mA for 3 V GSM SIM cards, an integrated intelligent power limitation system automatically adapts the chip's internal frequency, resulting in maximum performance during all Smart Card operations.

Sony Develops Biodegradable Smart Card

Sony Corp announced they have teamed with Mitsubishi Plastics Inc, to develop a contactless Smart Card made from plant-derived plastic instead of the typical oil-based plastics that do not decompose. The Smart Cards material itself is made from polylactic acid mixed with special additives. This new Biodegradable card is said to the the first of its kind but due to financial constraints timeframes for the production of these cards is still an ongoing issue.

Doors Open To Fortress Smart Card

Madejski Stadium, the home of Reading Football Club, UK, is the latest venue to join the Smart FC Scheme from Fortress, following hot on the heels of Manchester City FC and Liverpool FC. The Smart FC Scheme has been running at the Madejski Stadium since the start of the 2004/5 Coca-Cola Championship Season, and will see the introduction of the World's first smart paper tickets at the Reading Football Club v Preston North End game on September 14th 2004.

Fortress contactless card readers have been fitted at all of the Madejski's turnstiles. To enter the stadium, all fans, whether at home or away, simply hold their Smart Card or smart-ticket over the reader. Access is automatic and extremely fast (1,000 fans per hour per turnstile) and there is no requirement for human turnstile operators. Turnstile operators have been redeployed as Customer Helpers, strengthening the quality of service at the venue. The system is very robust, and can cope easily with network and power failure and improved security is achieved through a unique reporting facility, presenting live information at the stadium's control room. This allows the venue to know which fan entered the stadium, when and through which turnstile. Implementing the fast-track concept means that visitors to Madejski Stadium can now book their tickets over the telephone or the internet, and use their smartcard to enter the stadium, without waiting for the tickets to arrive by post and without having to queue at the ticket office.

Cubic Acquires Traf-Park

Cubic Transportation Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corp., has acquired Traf-Park, Inc. of Quebec, Canada, a leading provider of automated parking systems in North and South America. The acquisition marks the first step in a strategic roadmap to broaden Cubic's core business in fare collection systems for public transportation by expanding its products and services group. The group will focus on leveraging Cubic's Smart Card systems technology for additional commuter service applications, such as parking. Traf-Park's current customer base includes mass transit operators, universities, hospitals, parking operators, museums, airports, hotels and exhibition centers.

New Method for Blank Card Manufacturing

Card manufacturers with a niche in blank card manufacturing can now sort top quality product suitable for dye sublimation printing from product with other quality levels more suitable for industrial applications by using the Spartanics 930 Card Inspection System technology, modified for concentrated inspection of card surface quality. This new technique for automated blank card inspection developed by Spartanics enables card manufacturers to significantly increase the profitability of blank card manufacturing.

Asocebú Colombia Identifies Cattle with Sokymat Glass Tags

Sokymat SA, a supplier of RFID transponders, has announced that their Glass Tag RFID transponders have been selected by Asocebú, one of the largest livestock farmers associations in Colombia, for their cattle tracking system. In addition to the RFID tags, the animal tracking system consists of the Brain ID "cordless" RFID reader, an HP iPAQ Pocket PC and the corresponding software. The system is supplied by Sokymat's partner Brain ID, a leading Colombian system integrator with extensive experience in animal identification solutions.

Asocebú is currently implementing a pilot program in La Dorada, Caldas, Colombia where the weight of the livestock is monitored on a daily basis and information is registered directly to the iPAQ Pocket PC. The development of the system represents a major improvement in terms of database accuracy, data collection efficiency, and immediate availability of updated information.

Protocom Development Systems, a provider of password management solutions, today announced the availability of SecureLogin Advanced Authentication version 1.9 for Microsoft Networks. This authentication solution significantly increases network security in user-to-enterprise, business-to-business and customer-to-business transaction environments via the use of various authentication devices, including Smart Cards, USB smartkeys, tokens and biometrics.
