Wayfarer Transit Systems, a provider of Smart Card technology and revenue collection systems, is playing a major role in the roll out of contactless Smart Card technology for Swedish Railways (SJ) in the Malarden region (TiM), which is the area surrounding Stockholm. Wayfarer has been working with its Swedish partner, Modul-System AB to supply and install 89 Point Of Sale (POS) units and 128 platform-based Smart Card Validators (SCV's) at 36 locations in the region. The Smart Card system is based on Mifare, formatted to the RKF standard - volume A, which is the general open card format planned for use in public transport within Sweden and other Scandinavian countries. The 'BiT' system is the basic ticketing platform in the region, with 200,000 Smart Cards currently in use in the system.
Wayfarer provided TGX based technology in two forms. The TGX150 unit was re-configured specifically to meet the Point of Sale (POS) requirements, with the menu driven graphic display and soft keys providing easy and fast selection of ticket and fare. The main components of the TGX150 - the main control board, PSU, card read/write unit and display - were re-packaged with vandal resistant keys and a heater in a robust enclosure to meet the environmental requirements of the platform based Smart Card Validator (SCV) applications.
International Card Establishment, Inc., has announced that its recently acquired gift and loyalty unit, Neos Merchant Solutions, has successfully implemented a gift and loyalty program for Juice It Up! Franchise Corporation, a rapidly growing 67-store chain offering smoothies and other nutritional beverages in California, Florida, Texas and Washington.
After winning a competition against over a dozen other gift and loyalty program providers, Neos implemented a Smart Card based gift and loyalty program at Juice It Up! franchise stores, starting in 2003. The success of the Juice It Up! gift and loyalty program over the past 13 months has led that company to make it mandatory for any new franchisee to offer the program and use Neos' credit card processing services.
The program confers a number of benefits to Juice It Up! franchise owners, including: (1) improved cash flow -- prepaid gift cards are issued for cash today against future sales; (2) brand identity -- a gift card acts as a "walking billboard" in the owner's wallet, offering a constant reminder of where to shop; (3) brand loyalty -- the gift card gives Juice It Up! customers a 5% point rebate on their purchases, which can only be redeemed at Juice It Up! stores; (4) faster check out lines and more security -- because the Smart Card based gift card stores all of the data on the card itself without the need to dial up and verify the credit on the card and is virtually impossible to counterfeit.
