Gemplus International S.A. has announced record fourth quarter and fiscal year results. Revenue for the fourth quarter was 386 million euros, up 48% from the same quarter a year ago. Operating income was 47 ME, compared with 32.5 ME for the same quarter a year ago. Net profit for the fourth quarter was 41 million euros.
For the full year, revenue was 1.205 BE, up 57% from the previous year's 767 ME. Operating Income was 127 ME compared with 57 ME for the previous year. Net income for FY2000 was 99 ME.
Gemplus' Telecommunications business which consists of wireless SIM modules and the associated software and services, prepaid phone cards and scratch cards, grew over 80% in terms of Q4 to Q4 comparisons as well as Fiscal 2000 to Fiscal 1999 comparisons. This reflects a continuation of trends in the wireless space where growth is approaching 100% year-over-year.
Looking forward, Gemplus indicated that while there are a number of macroeconomic factors and mobile handset industry trends that would suggest caution in projecting growth going forward, it remains optimistic about 2001.
GlobalPlatform, the cross industry organisation promoting a standardised technical framework for multiple application Smart Cards, has appointed Marc Kekicheff to the new post of Technical Director. The role was created to drive forward the development of Open Platform, and other open standards, as well as co-ordinating the activities of GlobalPlatform's four committees. Marc will act as the lead technical official and chief strategist in the development of new specifications.
He has 12 year's experience in Smart Card technology and joins from Visa International, where he is Vice President of Emerging Technologies.
MAXIMUS, a provider of program management and consulting services for state and local government, has reported record revenues for the first quarter of $112.9 million compared to $89.7 million for the same period in fiscal year 2000, an increase of 26%. Net income for the first quarter was $8.7 million compared to $7.7 million for the first quarter of the previous year.
Dr David V. Mastran, Maximus CEO, said: "We have been successful entering a number of new markets. One such new opportunity arose in the Systems Group, where we were very pleased to be the first selected for a $3.6 million Smart Card contract with the US Department of Veterans Affairs under the auspices of the $1.5 billion GSA Smart Identification Card Program. While the initial dollar amount is small, it opens up a new source of business for MAXIMUS and one with significant revenue potential."
Affarsstrategerna's portfolio company Swedish Advanced Technology Systems (SWATS) won the prize for "Best Business Proposition" during The Late Stage and IPO Forum in Munich.
SWATS' business idea is to develop and market the SWATS Display Card to penetrate the high end of the global Smart Card market and will seek strategic partnerships with companies who can produce the card, integrate the card in applications and can offer a wide distribution net.
The SWATS Display-Card is an ISO7816 compatible card with a integrated LCD display and browse buttons. The integrated display enables the cardholder to, off-line, read information stored on the card. The information is automatically updated whenever the card is processed in a card reader. The operating system is fully compatible with any host system operating Smart Cards, and can therefore easily be integrated in existing applications. The card is fitted with a lithium battery giving a life span of 2 years.
Affarsstrategerna, a leading seed investment venture capital company, owns 36 per cent of SWATS.
Hypercom Corporation has named O.B. Rawls IV as senior vice president and general manager, US and Canada. Previously, he was executive vice president of operations of Caredata.com, a healthcare information technology company.
In his new position, Mr. Rawls will be directly responsible for managing and directing Hypercom sales, service and support throughout the United States and Canada. He succeeds John Marshall, who has been promoted to senior vice president, Office of The President.
