G&D to Develop New ANZ Smart Credit Card

The Australasian division of Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) has announced that it has won a contract to supply ANZ Bank with a Visa Open Platform (VOP) smart credit card system. The project is claimed to be the first in the world to fully support the VOP standard and include a full version of the Visa smart debit/credit application (VSDC).

The ANZ Smart Card, which is based on the JavaCard technology, is being released to ANZ customers in Australia and New Zealand and will be supported by chip-enabled merchant terminals. As well as containing the VSDC application, the card also has the ability for two other applications to be loaded pre or post-card issuance.

Catuity to Focus on CRM in 2002

Card loyalty specialists Catuity have revealed that it is to focus on integrating its card loyalty and incentive software with CRM database functionality in 2002.

According to a report from the company which details its business activities for next year, the new strategy will allow "retailers and card issuers to use current transaction and historical CRM data to help create and deliver instant loyalty and incentive rewards to consumers at the time and place of a payment transaction".

The report also notes that Catuity has predicted a positive cash flow in the fourth quarter of 2001 and profitability for all of 2002.

Datacard to Offer Smart Card Health Security

Datacard has developed a new product aimed at easing the implementation of Smart Card programs in the Health Care industry. Datacard's 'Signex' claims to enable users to store sensitive health data on the Smart Card whilst preventing inappropriate users from accessing the data.

Signex offers new encryption capabilities to keep Smart Card information secure throughout application initialisation, loading and handling of the information. A "user sealing" option ensures that all schemes meet data protection and privacy legislation.

Nokia Out-perform Q4 Predictions

Nokia gave technology stocks a much needed boost yesterday when its mid-quarter update statement revealed that earnings for Q4 2001 may surpass original predictions.

Based on developments during October and November, the company said it expects total sequential net sales growth for the Nokia group to reach approximately 20% - in line with earlier guidance. However, Earnings Per Share (EPS) may surpass the previously indicated range of EUR 0.18 - EUR 0.20.

Buoyant handset revenues in the fourth quarter, which are expected to rise 25% compared to the previous quarter, was credited for the surge in sales.

Thales Launches New P3 Product Family

Thales has launched its new 'Personalisation Preparation Process' (P3) family of systems. The family includes the P3 Desktop, P3 Advance and P3 Server, and claims to offer improved application data generation for Smart Cards.

The family offers the ability to expand the hardware and software capability as the need grows, allowing card issuers and providers to pay only for the performance they require.
