US $7m Contract for Smart Card PoS Terminals

Hypercom Corporation has been awarded a contract worth more than US $7 million from Visanet Brasil to install Smart Card readers and software on tens of thousands of Visanet-branded Hypercom T7 terminals throughout the country.

"This agreement represents one important part of Visanet Brasil's efforts to upgrade its card reader base to accept Smart Cards," said Fernando Castejon, Vice President of Products, Visa do Brasil. "Our goal is to Smart Card enable 100% of our terminal base. When we achieve that, we will have more than 200,000 Smart Card capable terminals. That is far ahead of virtually any other country in Latin America."


Infineon Samples Multimedia Baseband IC for GPRS Class 12 Phones

Infineon Technologies has begun sampling the E-GOLD+ V3, a GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) Class 12 single-chip integrated circuit (IC) solution for all GSM networks (GSM 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz networks). The latest addition to Infineon's GOLD family supports multimedia features such as, mobile commerce and WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) over GPRS, and also provides the option for an MP3 decoder for audio (music) playback over the phone.


VoiceStream Wireless Celebrates New Service with Free Rock Concert

VoiceStream Wireless Corp. and Motorola have announced a free concert performance by the rock group Smash Mouth in Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park on August 31, 2001, to celebrate the arrival of VoiceStream Wireless to Atlanta.

"We now connect Atlanta area residents with the national VoiceStream GSM network, offering a great rate plan for our new customers," explained John Clelland, Vice President of Marketing, VoiceStream Wireless. "We thought the perfect way to celebrate our new presence in Atlanta was to bring our new customers one of the nation's hottest rock acts for free."


Directions, Traffic and Weather Reports for Singapore GSM Phones

Maptuit Corporation, a provider of wireless and wireline eGeo services (services that combine telephony systems with digitised maps) has teamed up with Singapore-based Agis and Connectopia to launch a system that will allow Singaporeans to locate businesses and local attractions via GSM mobile phones and get directions to those locations.

Agis is a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) company specialising in the collection of map data and has a database of places of interest such as restaurants, pubs, clinics, ATMs, coffee shops and 4-D Toto outlets throughout Singapore. Connectopia is the owner of Zeepee, a Short Message System (SMS) entertainment and people finder.

Maptuit has completed modelling the Singapore road network and will soon be offering directions, traffic and weather conditions to mobile phones through alliances with local communication companies.
