Multi-Application Smart Visa Card

Gemplus International has announced that Providian Financial Corporation will soon deploy a new online convenience application to Providian Smart Visa cardholders, powered by Gemplus' GemUtilities software, Smart chips, and Smart Card readers. By enhancing the successful Providian Smart Visa program, with over 1 million cards already deployed, Gemplus and Providian are continuing their collaboration to meet growing consumer demand for Smart Card solutions in the US.

With Gemplus' GemUtilities v1.6 software and a Smart Card reader attached to their PC, Providian Smart Visa cardholders are able to conveniently make online purchases and securely store personal data on their Smart Cards. GE Appliances has introduced a new line of high-performance washers and dryers suitable for any commercial application - from coin stores, apartments and retirement homes, to college campuses and health clubs. The new line includes units with Smart Card technology as well as coin-operated and non-coin models.

GE is also the only appliance manufacturer that offers two different factory installed Smart Card systems. The systems are supplied by ESD and BridgePoint. CDMA/GSM Roaming Using R-UIM-Enabled CDMA Handsets

QUALCOMM, a pioneer of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, together with SchlumbergerSema and Samsung Telecommunications America have announced the successful demonstration of a removable user identity module (R-UIM) solution.

The demonstration used a QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT) Mobile Station Modem (MSM) with an integrated R-UIM interface and R-UIM Simera Airflex system by SchlumbergerSema in a Samsung handset. This solution supports roaming services and Smart Card capabilities across CDMA and GSM networks. The end-to-end system provides CDMA handset manufacturers with a comprehensive solution that allows a subscriber's identity to be stored in a single removable card, a capability that is mandatory for the Chinese wireless market. This system solution will make global roaming to countries using different frequencies, or across CDMA or GSM networks, easier by allowing subscribers to exchange handsets while using the same card to maintain all of their personal information, including network settings, privileges, preferences, phone books and more.

Osram to Acquire all Infineon Shares in their Joint Venture

Osram GmbH will acquire all Infineon Technologies AG shares in their joint venture, Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH & Co. OHG, at a cost of Euro 565 million. With this acquisition, Osram will strengthen its market position in the dynamic field of opto semiconductors, while Infineon will focus its resources more strongly on its core business activities. The transaction will take immediate effect.

With the acquisition of the 49-percent share of Infineon, Osram Opto Semiconductors will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Osram. In fiscal year 2000 (ending September) Osram Opto Semiconductors achieved total sales of Euro 281 million with some 3,600 employees worldwide.

"The sale of our shares in Osram Opto Semiconductors is another important step in optimising our portfolio," explained Dr. Ulrich Schumacher, President and CEO of Infineon Technologies. "This disinvestment and the sale of the infrared components business allows us to further concentrate on our communication segments, such as local and wide area networks and network access within our wireline communications group."
