Gemplus Leads the Smart Card Industry says Survey

Gemplus International S.A has been named the leader in the Smart Card industry, according to a Gartner Dataquest market survey. Gemplus leads the Smart Card market with 35% market share for memory and microprocessor cards in 2000, 3% ahead of its nearest competitor. In all, the company shipped 623 million units last year, according to Gartner Dataquest estimates.

2000 was a record year for Gemplus with the highest revenue growth amongst the major players in the industry (57% up from 1999).

Rainbow and Cybermate Infotek Team to Target India

Rainbow Technologies' Digital Rights Management (DRM) group and systems integrator Cybermate Infotek Ltd (CIL) have teamed to integrate CIL's client-authentication solutions with Rainbow's iKey 2000 series workstation-authentication solution.

CIL, one of India's leading providers of public key infrastructure (PKI) security solutions, will market the iKey authentication token to enterprise clients as an easy way to store and use digital certificates and digital signatures.

Deepak Prasad, director of Rainbow's India operations, said: "Together, Rainbow and CIL will deliver iKey-based solutions for secure remote access, secure e-mail and virtual private network (VPN) security."

Nortel GSM Contracts in China

China Mobile, the largest wireless carrier in China, has awarded Nortel Networks new contracts estimated to be worth more than US$105 million for major expansions of GSM digital cellular networks in Hebei, Anhui and Guizhou provinces.

The China Mobile Hebei contract - estimated to be worth US$83 million - calls for Nortel Networks to implement the seventh expansion of the province's GSM 900/1800 dual-band digital cellular network, covering five key southern cities and increasing network subscriber capacity by one million to a total of five million subscribers.

In Anhui and Guizhou provinces, Nortel Networks will enhance existing GSM 900 networks to deliver GSM 900/1800 dual-band wireless services. Nortel Networks will also increase Anhui's network capacity by 140,000 subscribers to a total of 300,000, and Guizhou's by 330,000 to a total of 930,000. All three expanded networks are scheduled to be in commercial service by September 2001.

Nortel has also won a contract from Ningbo Unicom estimated at more than US$31 million for expansion of its existing GSM 900/1800 dual-band digital cellular network which will increase network capacity by 350,000 subscribers to a total of 910,000.

Wireless Village Initiative

Ericsson, Motorola, and Nokia have established Wireless Village, the Mobile Instant Messaging and Presence (IMPS) initiative, to define and promote a set of universal specifications for mobile instant messaging and presence services and create a community of supporters.

The specifications will be used for exchanging messages and presence information between mobile devices, mobile services and Internet-based instant messaging services. The protocol will be optimised for the requirements of mobile devices and wireless networks.

The Wireless Village initiative will deliver an architectural specification, protocol specifications, as well as test specifications and tools for mobile IMPS. The initiative will also define procedures and tools for testing conformance and interoperability of mobile instant messaging and presence services.

UK Supermarket Chain to Launch Home Delivery Service

Versatile Mobile Systems (Canada) Inc, a leading mobile commerce solutions provider, has entered into an agreement with LM Solutions (LMS) to provide software and integration services for their announced home grocery delivery business initiative.

LMS is being launched in partnership with Waitrose - the food retail division of the John Lewis Partnership - to capture a significant share of the British grocery market, worth approximately 95 billion pounds each year.

The initial contract includes an enterprise license for Versatile's "Delivery Director" mobile commerce solution, as well as enterprise server software. Versatile will provide a mobile wide area communications infrastructure that will give LM Solutions the ability to track deliveries wirelessly over the GSM network, thereby giving them a unique home delivery system with exceptional customer service. The initial contract is valued in excess of Canadian $1 million, with the first phase of the launch planned for later this year.
