SmarTrip from Washington to Maryland

Cubic Transportation Systems has won a $21.9 million contract to provide Maryland's buses with a new fare system compatible with the Washington Metro's SmarTrip card. Under the contract, older Cubic bus fare collection boxes will be replaced with a system that allows riders to use coins, currency, magnetic tickets and the Washington Metropolitan Area (WMATA) SmarTrip contactless Smart Card.

The Maryland Mass Transit Administration (MTA) has named Cubic the prime contractor for the new automatic fare collection program. The system will eventually link payment for 850 Baltimore region buses and 107 over the road vehicles serving suburban Maryland commuters to the WMATA system. The contract also provides the agency's subway system with entry gate upgrades. The gates will have new magnetic card "swipe" readers so that they are also linked with the new bus payment system.

WMATA recently announced a new contract with Cubic that will link Metro buses to its rail payment program, creating the country's first regional interstate multi-modal public transit fare collection system. With the MTA contract with Cubic, the regional system will also be the first Smart Card to serve more than one transit agency.

Integra LifeSciences Acquires GMSmbH

Integra LifeSciences Holdings Corporation has acquired all of the outstanding stock of GMSmbH, the German manufacturer of the LICOX Brain Tissue Oxygen Monitoring System, for $2.3 million in cash. Prior to the acquisition, the Company's Integra NeuroSciences division had exclusive marketing rights to the LICOX products in the United States and certain other markets.

Stuart M. Essig, Integra's President and Chief Executive Officer, commented: "Since its launch in the United States, the LICOX system has been used successfully in several recent neuro trauma cases, providing the doctors and nurses with critical information about their patient's condition. This acquisition should accelerate the introduction of the LICOX system in markets around the world."

The LICOX(R) system provides continuous quantitative regional monitoring of dissolved oxygen and temperature in cerebral tissues. These measurements are valuable diagnostic and prognostic indicators with important clinical and research applications.

The LICOX system is a universal clinical tissue oxygen and temperature monitor. Its oxygen and temperature micro catheter probes are precalibrated and are supplied with their individual calibration data electronically stored on a Smart Card. The probes are simple to use and accurate even in long-term use.
