Smart Technology Solutions (STS) was set up in October 1997 with the express purpose of providing the retailer with a set of smart card based software products for use at the point of service in accordance with the British Retail Consortium's chip card
architecture. STS' flagship product, Emvelink, processes smart debit and credit card transactions to the standards defined by Europay MasterCard and Visa (EMV) and has obtained the prerequisite EMV Level 2 approval. Emvelink is described as an EMV
Level 2 kernel. Processing smart card transactions is significantly more complex than for magnetic stripe. The software development and approval cycle to provide EMV capability represents a substantial investment. Emvelink provides the simplest and most
cost-effective means of upgrading existing point of sale software to accept EMV smart cards, as are now being issued in the UK and other European countries. Emvelink is a software component that enables PC-based point of sale
and similar systems with integrated EFT capabilities to accept EMV smart cards. Emvelink incorporates all the necessary logic to perform complete Level 2 EMV transaction processing to EMV 3.1.1, including the latest APACS standards.
- Interfaces to several EMV Level 1 approved smart PIN pad card readers - Preserves existing investment in EFT software and magnetic stripe hardware - Uses the point of sale PC processor rather than processor in external reader
The product is strategically positioned to become a key element in the world's migration from the magnetic stripe card to smart card with PIN needed to combat the spiralling counterfeit and stolen card fraud. From the outset,
Emvelink has been designed for maximum deployment opportunities. It has been written in Java for the greatest portability. Its flexible interfaces allows integration with any EMV Level 1 approved card reader, any card payment processing system and
any point of interaction. The latter includes the traditional retail point of sale, kiosk, vending machine, ticketing, mobile, set-top box, and Internet; and in either client (till) or server modes.
