Infineon Technologies (formerly known as Siemens Semiconductors) is a supplier of integrated circuits (ICs) and modules for Smart Cards with a market share of almost 50%.
The company has a broad product semiconductor portfolio which includes memory ICs for loyalty and telephone applications through to controller ICs for payment, Pay TV and GSM phone applications.
They also supply contactless reader ICs and the cards ICs inc. a microcontroller IC with both contact and contactless interfaces supporting both ISO14443 type A and type B.
Infineon is also working on a joint programme with Sun Microsystems to develop Java (TM) based ICs. Recent announcements include high-end cryptographic microcontrollers for multiple application operating systems approved to ITSEC level E4 High.
Infineon is a founder member of Mastercard's MAOSCO consortium, VISA's partnership programme and supports MS Windows for SmartCard (WinSC). Infineon has introduced a fingerprint sensor for biometric verification of a card holder.
